Hi everyone! My name is Rhonda and I’m so happy to have been asked to contribute some Kpop flair to Pastel Wasteland. I’ve been listening to the kpop genre since 2016 so I’m excited to share my thoughts on music videos and I hope you enjoy it! The first video for Kpop Corner is Momoland’s newest song, “I’m So Hot”.
If there is one thing I can say about Momoland, it is that they are consistent. If you’ve ever heard “Bboom Bboom” or “Baam”, you’ll notice that their singles all have a very similar “high energy happy” feel and a similar structure (verse, chorus, rap part, chorus) to the song. While I’ve seen some comments complaining about it, I see it as they know what works for them and they stick with it. I’m all for experimenting styles and genres (BTS, Straykids, and my favorite girl group Dreamcatcher), but I also like having some groups that I know will always put out songs I wanna dance to. “I’m So Hot” is definitely one of those songs. The lyrics are pretty simple (all about being pretty and hot, of course) but that beat is life! I love the trumpet during the chorus (it makes me wanna do the Charleston) and their voices are beautiful as ever.
One thing you’ll notice is that two of the members are missing. Daisy and Taeha sat out this comeback due to “health and personal reasons”. I’m here to discuss the video, not any rumor mill bull crap. The group said they would both return for their next comeback, so all I can say is rest up and be well! Daisy usually does the rap part, but with her sitting out, Jooe and Hyebin got to show their rap chops this time and slayed! Jooe is my bias, so anytime she’s front and center, I love it.
If there is one thing I’d have to comment about, it’s the dance. Momoland is known for their complex, high energy dancing. The dance for “I’m So Hot” is very simple in comparison and I just feel like they could have upped it a little more. Not that it’s “bad”, just underwhelming.
Overall, while I thought the dance could have been more, the song itself is a major bop that I’ve already bought and played on repeat all day. Welcome back Momoland and I hope you have a successful comeback!
