Seraph. x calicry – “Nemesis” [Wave]

“Nemesis” is worth getting excited over. In large part because it’s a collaboration between two of the brightest lights associated with the Sekai Collective: Seraph. and calicry.

Calicry may be familiar to some of you. Her last album otherrealm came in at number 4 on our Top 10 Best Albums of 2020 list. Seraph. is a fellow traveler in the wave scene. One I haven’t covered before, but whose work I’ve been enthusiastic about for a while now.

This track shows how different artists can bring out the best in one another. Contrasts exist here: calicry’s work tends to be (relatively) “mellow” compared to a lot of Wave. She masterfully conjures mysterious ambiences and here her style is complimented well by Seraph.’s uncanny skill with beats.

“Nemesis” opens with striking, hypnotic synth-guitar flourishes. Soft, ethereal vocalisation glides across them, as keys dart around, building anticipation. A rich deep bass comes in, adding a meaty texture to the sound. It’s a really compelling mix.

That anticipation is sated around the 2 minute 30 mark when “Nemesis” drops into breakcore. The segue into these beats doesn’t feel jarring or disorienting. It’s seamless and enrapturing. Much like the song overall.
