We’ve discussed Brooklyn based producer/performer C Z A R I N A before. And any time is a good time to check in with her.
June 19th saw “Left Unsaid” drop. It’s a collaboration with another NYC producer, FUTURE ENEMIES. Between them they have conjured up a wondrous piece of cyberpunk-inflected darkwave.
“Left Unsaid” opens with major signal noise, before giving way to something dark, penetrating, and unyielding. This single is characterised by downtempo yet severe synths that build towards a thunderous crescendo.
C Z A R I N A is given room to really unfurl her dramatic side. “Left Unsaid” is an incredibly intimate song, with deep currents of self-examination and expression. Here she gives one of her most emotive performances, on par with one of her best tracks: “Til The Last Star”.
The imagery of dark water in the video is a perfect representation of what “Left Unsaid” is about. Transitioning between states. Sinking away from the light towards uncertain depths, while reflecting on your past and things you’ve left unresolved.
There’s a lot to love about “Left Unsaid” in of itself. But it’s important to reflect on the greater context around it. C Z A R I N A is starting a new chapter. Relocating from New York to Europe, where she will continue her great work. And it’s a great way for FUTURE ENEMIES to open themselves up to a wider audience.
Despite its dark tone, “Left Unsaid” represents their first steps towards a brighter future.
