Lady Gaga’s much awaited collaboration with K-Pop icons BLACKPINK bursts onto the scene, in the form of bittersweet anthem ‘Sour Candy’.
For anyone not familiar, BLACKPINK are a Korean girl group with members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, known for their unique brand of high-energy pop, punctuated by empowering, no-nonsense lyrics and hypnotic instrumentals.
Echoing the best elements of ‘ARTPOP’, Gaga’s latest lockdown release is a bold and vibrant whirlwind of House, Pop and Spoken Word, designed for the dancefloor and punchy as hell.
Setting things off with a short introduction followed by a verse in Korean, the track feels contemporary and accomplished, a celebration of international music with two industry heavyweights (well, technically five!)
The beat is sultry and enigmatic, underscoring shimmery performances as the track morphs and transcends genres, elevating it above similar mainstream pop fare.
This is a standout of the album so far, and certainly a contender for best collaboration of the year. BLACKPINK are well-known across the globe now, and this is sure to positively build upon their 2017 collab with Dua Lipa, ‘Kiss and Make Up’.
