Interview: ASHRR [Music]

By robulitski @robulitski · On March 7, 2020

In the latest edition of our interview series, we talk to Los Angeles-based band ASHRR about their music, and the process of creating their new EP under the threat of a looming epidemic.

PW- Hey guys! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us today. How are things in LA?

Currently, we’re in a state of emergency as of today in Los Angeles county with the threat of the coronavirus  so we’ve been holed up writing and recording our next EP.

PW- So from what I’ve read, you all met each other through mutual friends, and each come from different walks of life. What was the “turning point” so to speak where you decided to form ASHRR and move forward as one?

It was a combination of things but mainly we have a great camaraderie and a goal of making great art. It’s so much fun to be working with everyone in this band because we’re all different personalities and backgrounds but when we combine our ideas together, it’s pretty fucking special.

PW- What is the main goal you each have for the project? How would you define “success”?

The more people hear about ASHRR and the more shows we get to do around the world , the better.  We released our debut album last year but we’re laser-focused on a new sound and direction for the band and can’t wait to release new music and start playing these songs live.

PW- Your sound is a unique mix of analogue synth and Bowie-esque vocals, with some very cinematic moments. Was this a natural amalgamation of your different inspirations and journeys, and what has been the biggest challenge in settling on a sound you’re all happy with?

We constantly are evolving as a band and from the new songs, you’ll hear a harder more primal edge to our sound that is much more guitar driven than synths. We’re always looking to push the envelope as a band and we feel that this new stuff is exactly where we want to be as a band.

PW- A bit more of a fun question now- if you could play one fantasy/ dream concert or gig as ASHRR, what would it be?

I think a bill with Depeche Mode, U2 and The Cure would be up there!

PW- In this kind of industry, it can be tough to feel like you’re moving forwards sometimes. How do you battle these feelings when they come up, and do you have any advice to other people who might be struggling in a similar way?

Make great music and follow your gut.  Money and success and fame may or may not follow but if that’s what you’re chasing , then you’re not doing it right

PW- And final question! It’s more of an invitation actually. Use the next few sentences to tell us what you’re up to next, and where we can follow you online 🙂

We’re finishing up our next EP over the next month and will be putting the first single out in Mid-April with shows to follow.
