#CREATORTALK – Galaxzi [Interview]

By Ryan Cole @Caus3s · On October 14, 2018

#CREATORTALK is a series of articles and interviews, with a focus on the creative industries and the talent working within them.

In this edition of #CREATORTALK, we speak to American singer/songwriter Galaxzi.

PW – Hello Galaxzi. How’s it going?

Hello! I’m doing great. It’s nice to meet you!

PW – So, first things first: how would you sum up who you are and what you do?

I’m an alternative pop singer-songwriter who feels a little out of place on Earth. I call my style of music Sci-Pop. I love fashion and astronomy.

PW – What are the characteristics and themes of Sci-Pop, and your work in general?

Musically, Sci-Pop is alternative pop with futuristic synth. Think pop but with sounds you would typically hear in sci-fi movie soundtracks. Lyrically anything futuristic + celestial with deeper meanings. It should get trippy. My typical themes are loneliness, loss, and love.

The songs are very story-centric, so the lyrics and music should both tell that story. If the lyrics say we’re in space then you’re going to hear galaxies.

Aesthetic wise… Sci-Pop is futuristic, holographic, iridescent, with a splash of grunge cause space is lonely.

PW – You recently performed at the Surrounded By The Sound Music Festival in South Carolina. What was that experience like?

I was the only pop singer at a mostly reggae music festival. But, I had a great time and the other bands were awesome. I’d love to do it again.

PW – You’ve made great use of ReverbNation – a platform which helps musicians manage their careers. How useful has it been for you?

ReverbNation has given me some great opportunities. I’ve been invited to perform at music conferences, music festivals, invited to a songwriting retreat, met a couple of agents, and was granted free recording studio work + video work at Full Sail University all because of ReverbNation. I’m a new artist so these opportunities have helped tremendously.

PW – Which artists would you say have particularly inspired you? And which artists would you recommend others check out?

When I was about 5 years old I was obsessed with Stevie Nicks. The song “Rhiannon” really impacted me as a kid and is what inspired me to become a songwriter. I’ve been writing songs ever since. I also love Blondie, David Bowie, No Doubt, Marina + the Diamonds, and Lady Gaga. Oh, and Britney Spear’s “Toxic” is my jam!

Some newer artists I recommend checking out are Kim Petras and Poppy!

PW- This site focuses heavily on creativity and the real people behind the art. How does creativity affect you on a day to day basis? Does inspiration typically strike you out of nowhere; or do you have very specific ideas and goals for the projects you work on?

I definitely song-write better at night. That’s when I’m able to tap into my creativity. But, sometimes inspiration will strike at the most random moments…

I like to let my creativity go wild and sing out everything it’s feeling. This allows me to become highly emotional and the words, the melody, everything just comes. This process typically forms the first draft of the song. After this, I usually revisit, and revise, revisit, and revise, until the song is finished.

Books and movies really inspire me. So does astronomy as you can most likely tell haha. 🙂

PW- What are your ambitions for the future?

I want to find two alien girl musicians to join my Sci-Pop band and tour internationally someday. I’m also relocating to LA soon.

PW- In this kind of economy and industry, it can be tough to feel like you’re moving forwards sometimes. How do you battle these feelings when they come up and do you have any advice to others who may be feeling the same?

Oh, it definitely can get challenging to do this. But that doesn’t discourage me. Just because something is difficult doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it.

My advice is… if you’re feeling down use that pain to write a song or create something. Great art comes from great pain. And don’t give up!

PW- And final question. Actually, it’s more of an invitation. Feel free to use the next few sentences to promote what you’re up to.

I’m currently working on my album which will be released in 2020! You can follow me on iamgalaxzi.com, Instagram and Twitter at @iamgalaxzi for updates on that…

Thank you for the interview! 🙂
