#CREATORTALK- Paigey Cakey [Interview]

In this edition of #CREATORTALK, we speak to Paigey Cakey ( @mspaigeycakey on Instagram). #CREATORTALK is a series of articles and interviews, with a focus on the creative industries and the the talent working within them.

PW- Hey Paigey! How’s it going?
It’s going really well, just enjoying the summer weather whilst working on a new body of work.

PW- So, first thing’s first. For those who don’t know yet, how would you sum up who you are and what you do?
I go by the name of Paigey Cakey, I’m from East London, Hackney. I’m a rapper, singer and actress. Some might know me for my roles in Attack The Block and BBC1’s Waterloo Road.

PW- You’ve had an amazing career to date, including work in TV and music. Do you have one highlight that has really stuck with you?
I think starring in BBC1’s hit Waterloo Road will always be one of my highlights. I was a fan of that show when i was in school so being part of the cast was an amazing experience.

PW- The aesthetic in your music videos is very 90s/ glitch inspired. What influences do you have in terms of visual style?
I’m a massive fan of 90’s Hip-Hop. The style and vibe alone just gets me every time. I grew up listening to Missy Elliott, she’s one of my favourite artists. I loved how creative her visuals were, so I wanted to bring a similar vibe with a smaller budget of course haha

PW- We know that the creative journey can be a real rollercoaster. If you could give some advice to yourself five years ago, what would it be?
I would have given myself advice on ‘saving and investing’. I used to blow money and now I’m older i wish i used that money to maybe create a studio in my earlier days. Also i would have prepared myself to have tough skin. A lot of negativity comes your way when you’re in the public eye.

PW- This blog focuses heavily on creativity and the real people behind the art. How does creativity affect you on a day to day basis? Do you get super inspired out and about, or is it more of a focused effort, where you can shut off from the world and just think?
I get inspired every single day. Driving around London and seeing different people and different places alone is inspiration. I find a lot of inspiration from music and travelling abroad, seeing and experiencing new things.

PW- In this kind of economy and industry, it can be tough to feel like you’re moving forwards sometimes. How do you battle these feelings when they come up, and do you have any advice to other people who might be struggling in a similar way?
I just always stay positive and level- headed. I never let things get me down, although it’s inevitable. I believe in lessons, not mistakes, so i live by this code. I would always say to others, never give up, follow your dream and remember ‘you may be closer to succeeding than you know’.

PW- And final question! It’s more of an invitation actually. Use the next few sentences to self-promote the hell out of what you’re up to, what we can watch/ listen to- no judgement!
Well, i’ve just dropped a new vlog on my YouTube channel, It’s absolutely hilarious so go check that out. I also dropped two videos within 2 months, ‘Pullup And Skrrr’ and ‘Notice Me’ so go check them. I’m currently working on a new mixtape to drop later this year. Gonna be touring Europe from September so BAM!
