#CREATORTALK- deafpony [Interview]

In this edition of #CREATORTALK, we speak to deafpony (@wearedeafpony on Instagram). #CREATORTALK is a series of articles and interviews, with a focus on the creative industries and the the talent working within them.

PW- Hey deafpony! How’s it going?

Alright thank you!

PW- So, first thing’s first. For those who don’t know yet, how would you sum up who you guys are and what you do?

We’re an indie rock band from Croydon, South London who like writing sad songs and not using capital letters.

PW- As a band, you have described your style as emo-influenced indie rock. Who (or what) do you guys take inspiration from?

We take a lot of influence from the music we grew up listening to, mainly mid noughties alternative and indie as well as 90’s grunge. We’ve since got super into a lot emo revival bands like Turnover and American Football. On the indie side, our biggest influences would have to be Bombay Bicycle Club and The 1975.

PW- You released the “Favourite” EP back in 2017. What has the reaction been like? Is there a new EP on the horizon?

We were very happy with the reception our first EP got and have had some lovely feedback from listeners – we’ve only recently started the band so we had no idea what to expect, really. We’re just putting the finishing touches to our next release, which will be a double single coming out in the summer and we have plans for a subsequent EP.

PW- I love the tumblr-esque/ nostalgic aesthetic of your official website. Is this style a purposeful throwback to the height of emo/indie rock of the 2000’s, or is it simply a style that works for your vision of the music?

It’s a little bit of both really. We definitely wear our influences on our sleeves in terms of both music and aesthetics, being big fans of retro-style polaroid shots and Vans trainers. We also just wanted a clean website layout as it’s what we think looks nice and pleasing to the eye. The background picture for the site also might just be appearing in some artwork very soon

PW- This blog focuses heavily on creativity and the real people behind the art. How does creativity affect you on a day to day basis? Do you get super inspired out and about, or is it more of a focused effort, where you can shut off from the world and just think?

We’ve all in some capacity been affected by mental health related problems in the past few years. Music has been a great form of escapism for all of us, allowing us to blow off some steam and have a clear goal to work towards. It’s definitely more of a focused effort, mainly just sitting in a room and blocking out the rest of the world for a few hours.

PW- In this kind of economy and industry, it can be tough to feel like you’re moving forwards sometimes. How do you battle these feelings when they come up, and do you have any advice to other people who might be struggling in a similar way?

At least right for the time being, we’re making music purely out of enjoyment and aren’t profiting off it; to that end we’re not too fussed about taking huge strides forward. As a new band you’re only ever going to make little steps of progress at the start and we think that’s something you have to recognise. If we’re ever doubtful, we just keep the mindset that each show or release should be in some way better than the last, even if it’s only in very minor way so that there’s always progress. Our advice to other bands would be to keep at it and not worry too much about making huge steps of progress, at the end of the day all that really matters is you’re making the music that you want to make.

PW- And final question! It’s more of an invitation actually. Use the next few sentences to self-promote the hell out of what you’re up to, what we can watch/ listen to- no judgement!

We’ve got shows coming up this summer in London, Norwich and Birmingham with some other great bands, details of which can be found on our Facebook. We’ve got all our released music on Spotify and there’s more coming very soon – remember to subscribe so you know when it’s out!
