Hannah and Hanna in Dreamland comes to The New Theatre Royal Portsmouth, October 16th 2018.
Set in Margate in the Summer of 1999, Hannah and Hanna in Dreamland follows the story of two girls living in the seaside town; Hanna (Celia Meiras) an asylum seeker from Kosovo and Hannah (Lisa Payne) a local teenager, bored of her life in the seaside town, spending time with her boyfriend and his racist friends. The only common connection the two girls have, apart from their names is their love of singing along to their favourite pop music.
Sixteen years on Hanna from Kosovo returns to Margate in search of a Syrian girl, who she believes may have made it to England. Alongside this, the ‘jungle’ of Calais has been closed and attempts to cross the channel by its residents flood the local media. Hanna hopes her friend from Syria will be welcome into the seaside town of Margate and although a lot has changed, the air of hostility towards migrants and refugees still remains.
Parallel to 1999, Hanna’s arrival in Margate turned Hannah’s life upside down, her return takes them both on a journey that Hannah from Margate would never have imagined.
The production is a progression on from John Retallack’s award-winning play Hannah and Hanna, a performance that has been performed both nationally and internationally.
The performance of Hannah and Hanna in Dreamland is a Pay what you feel event which means that when you book your seat it is free. On arrival audience members will be given an envelope and when you exit you pay whatever you think the performance was worth.
We would like to reach out to the local community of Portsmouth and invite those who are interested in community theatre, and those wanting to experience a whole new culture of the arts. This is a production not to be missed!
