In this edition of #CREATORTALK, we speak to musician Chess Galea ( @chess_galea on Instagram). #CREATORTALK is a series of articles and interviews, with a focus on the creative industries and the the talent working within them.
PW- Hey Chess! How’s it going?
Really good thanks – just watched Dreamgirls at the West End, so feeling very inspired!
PW- So, first thing’s first. For those who don’t know yet, how would you sum up who you are and what you do?
I’m a small island girl with big dreams and a bigger work ethic. I sing and write songs, love all genres and I get a thrill out of performing.
PW- Your career to date has been fascinating, and a real journey. What have been the big highlights for you?
Thank you! That’s very kind. Probably being on ‘All Together Now’, that’s a pretty big highlight, but honestly just growing as an artist and working with such talented people has me humbled every day. I’m pretty sure some of my best highlights are still to come.
PW- You’re due to release a new song, “Personal” very soon. How would you describe the track?
Yes “Personal” will be part of the EP, albeit not the first single. I wrote the song after a dry, down period and all I did was open up my heart and wrote. I didn’t know if it was going to be a song, I just needed to speak to myself and figure things out, almost.
PW- I’ve been following your work for a long time, and you have always made a point of releasing strong visuals and interacting with fans on social media. How important do you think it is to have a vision for your brand in such a crowded marketplace?
Thanks yes you have been a great support! I think visuals not only support the audio art one has created, but that it is an art within itself, that can connote different angles and emotions. I think having an identity is important both for yourself and for those following you. You have to make clear what you stand for.
PW- This blog focuses heavily on creativity and the real people behind the art. How does creativity affect you on a day to day basis? Do you get super inspired out and about, or is it more of a focused effort, where you can shut off from the world and just think?
Sometimes I’ll be out and about and I’ll need a couple of mins silence to record an idea into my phone. Other times I do just want peace and quiet to find a heart string of mine to pull. I can be very private but I’m trying to open up through my songs so that I can share my experiences with you.
PW- In this kind of economy and industry, it can be tough to feel like you’re moving forwards sometimes. How do you battle these feelings when they come up, and do you have any advice to other people who might be struggling in a similar way?
I suffer with anxiety so there are many days I find it very hard to get out of bed. What I’ve learned though, is that results aren’t always immediate and something you may have worked on in the past, makes its butterfly effect into your future. If you’re really passionate, hold on.
PW- And final question! It’s more of an invitation actually. Use the next few sentences to self-promote the hell out of what you’re up to, what we can watch/ listen to- no judgement!
Please keep in touch with me by following me on Instagram and subscribe to my YouTube where I upload vlogs and covers. LOTS of new music is coming very very soon and it’s a throwback to the RNB everyone knows and loves, but with my own twist of course. Thank you from my full heart 💓
